Stainless Steel Inventory Builds Up in Wuxi and Foshan After Labour Day
According to the latest data released by Shanghai Metals Market (SMM), total stainless steel inventory across Wuxi and Foshan — two of China’s major distribution hubs — recorded a 1.4% increase between May 1 and May 8, 2025, rising from 975,400 tons to 989,100 tons.
This post-holiday inventory buildup was largely attributed to the Labour Day holiday effect, where downstream activity slowed while regular deliveries from mills continued. As a result, inventory levels across most stainless steel grades saw an upward trend.
Key Breakdown by Product Series:
300 Series:
Wuxi: +1.52% to 360,700 tons
Foshan: +1.88% to 222,500 tons
200 Series:
Wuxi: +0.64% to 94,000 tons
Foshan: +1.50% to 169,200 tons
400 Series:
Wuxi: +0.23% to 88,200 tons
Foshan: -1.68% to 54,500 tons
This temporary supply-demand imbalance underscores the importance of inventory tracking in stainless steel pricing and purchasing strategies. As the market rebalances, price fluctuations may follow depending on downstream demand and future mill output.
