European Stainless Steel Market Faces New Challenges: AST to temporarily suspend hot-rolled production

Italian stainless steel producer Acciai Speciali Terni (AST) has announced a temporary suspension its hot-rolled stainless steel production lines from April 14 to April 30.

Although AST’s exposure to the U.S. market is limited, the recent U.S. tariff announcements, combined with persistently high energy costs, are placing additional strain on European producers.

AST’s current situation reflects a broader concern—Europe’s stainless steel sector is facing increasing uncertainty, impacted by geopolitical shifts, an incomplete energy transition, and rising competition from Asia.
